In an ongoing effort designed to expand capacity and enhance navigation safety in the Suez Canal, a new record has been set for the number of transits through the waterway in a single day. On 13 March, a total of 107 vessels made the transit, marking a 15-percent increase from the previous month.
The project of expanding the waterway by adding a new channel in the southern sections, as well as improving some of the navigational issues in the area, was also designed to accommodate the next generation of ultra large container vessels expected to be using the canal in the future.
