In 2021, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) aimed to cut the carbon intensity of all ships by a minimum of 40% by 2030. This target is now are considered not far enough, and the IMO plans to revise its greenhouse gas strategy by 2023. Also in 2021, the U.S. set plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 50% by 2030, which included the transport sector.
An increasing number of vessels are already making the switch to liquefied natural gas (LNG). Cargo vessels and tankers are also experimenting with wind power to supplement traditional propulsion.
